The soldier readiness center, or SRC, is the main hub for deploying soldiers to be cleared for deployment. Medical stations evaluate physical fitness, lawyers check to see if your will is up to date, ID cards are checked and pay and benefits are verified prior to soldiers being sent overseas. It is usually filled with soldiers sitting or standing in various lines for each of those stations. Weapons are not allowed in the SRC, meaning none of them would have been carrying their personal weapons, and even of they had they would not have had ammunition.

The shooter is being reported as Major Malik Nadal Hasan. Possibly it is coincidence, but remember earlier this year, two soldiers were killed at a recruiting station in Arkansas.
