Growing government, centralizing government

Written by King Banaian.

Mark Perry shares with us a rather disturbing picture of how much government has grown in the 2000s. "The number of federal employees exceeded 2.8 million for the first time in January 2009, and federal jobs have increased by 82,000 employees since December 2008." So what has happened at the state and local level?? Let's look at Minnesota (data from DEED.)

This interesting view shows and hides. It shows the slowing of overall employment growth since the beginning of the Pawlenty administration, but it hides the fact that state employment has grown while local employment has shrunk in almost equal amount. I may like the idea of not having our state and local government grow as fast in this decade than the last two, but do I like having more of it concentrated at the state level? I think not.
