In the wake of the Heller decision, where the Supreme Court has finally acknowledged individual rights to keep and bear arms outside of controlling entities, a fine point has been brought to the fore. This right, like the others listed in our Bill of Rights is not granted to us by government. Our Declaration of Independence states quite plainly that these rights are bestowed upon us by our creator, not our government. Government cannot confer rights, it can only infringe upon them or deny them outright. The simple genius of our Bill of Rights (as it amends our Constitution) is that it limits the power of government in our daily affairs. Absent compelling reason, the individual shall remain sovereign in his person, property and papers. He (or she) is free from undue burdens such as billeting soldiers in peacetime, is entitled to a host of protections under criminal law, and can pray or say anything they bloody well feel like. Our Founding Fathers knew the real threat to liberty was Government, and it's singular propensity to grow and overreach. The Modern Liberal just can't grasp this. The Modern Liberal sees Government as a panacea, the solution to all ills. What is missed is the fact that Government is one of the most egregious of all ills. So when, in their earnest and misguided quest to disarm honest citizens, those same liberals bitterly cling to the words "well regulated militia" they completely miss the intent of the the words as framed by the entirety of the document which contains them. Not all regulation redounds from government. Sometimes there is a higher authority. Cross-posted at Anti-Strib. Comments welcome. |
