FLASH: Catholic School Opposes Abortion

Just when you thought you had heard everything! Imagine a Catholic High School having the audacity to make a decision based on the fundamental moral teachings of the Catholic Church. Such obedience is an outrage! Didn't they get the memo that the only acceptable position on abortion is the liberal pro-abortion position?

DFL State Representative (and DFL Governor Candidate #27)Paul Thiessen contradicts a basic tenet of Catholicism and then has the cajones to whine about not being in the Academy Of The Holy Angels Hall Of Fame.

The President of Holy Angels couldn't have been more conciliatory:

"We would like to provide you with some information regarding a recent action taken by the school.

As you may know, Paul Thissen, Academy of Holy Angels (AHA) class of 1985, was nominated for induction into the AHA Activities Hall of Fame this year.

The nominating committee’s primary criteria for the AHA Activities Hall of Fame are based on a person’s record while at Holy Angels, but we also must consider activities in college and professional life. Mr. Thissen had an outstanding activities career at Holy Angels and has had much success beyond.

That being said, the nominating committee was not aware of Mr. Thissen’s voting record in the Minnesota Legislature regarding pro-abortion issues.

As a result of Mr. Thissen’s public position to actively support pro-abortion issues, AHA has chosen not to include him among this year’s inductees to the AHA Activities Hall of Fame. We have done so, not because we do not appreciate his past achievements, but because we cannot endorse his legislative actions relating to abortion. Mr. Thissen’s legislative voting record is in conflict with the teachings of the Catholic Church, as explained by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in theirStatement on Catholics in Political Life.

The Statement says of those in political office, “The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.”

The Academy of Holy Angels remains proud of Mr. Thissen’s high school accomplishments, and we regret any unfortunate misunderstanding or embarrassment this process may have caused to him or to others in our AHA community.

You may see or hear about this story in the media in the coming days, and we wanted to provide you with some more information. Thank you again for your support of, and prayers for, the Academy of Holy Angels.

Jill M. Reilly,
Ed.D. President
