The 14th Victim

Written by Lady Logician.

Now that Major Nidal Malik Hasan has been officially charged in his murderous rampage, some are wondering why only 13 counts of murder when there were 14 total victims.

Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan was charged with 13 counts of murder for the Fort Hood massacre, but 14 persons were killed. Army Pvt. Francheska Velez, a 21-year-old Chicago native, was six weeks pregnant when she was gunned down. Her unborn child is the 14th victim, but the death so far has been ignored by our government.

The reason why people are wondering why no 14th count has to do with the enaction of the Unborn Victim's of Violence Act (also known as Laci and Connor's Law).  The law was passed in 2004 and recognizes a child in utero as human (regardless of the stage of development).  The law applies only to certain crimes which the US Government has jurisdiction over INCLUDING if the fetus was killed by a member of the United States military!

Now the military is stating that further charges could be brought against Major Hasan in the shooting rampage...

Additional charges were possible, said Chris Grey, spokesman for the Army Criminal Investigation Command. It had not been decided whether to charge Hasan with the death of the unborn child of a pregnant soldier who died, officials told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about the case publicly.

...but one has to wonder why the military has not decided on whether to charge Hasan in the death of Pvt. Velez' unborn child.  Could it be that maybe pressure is being brought to bear on the ACIC by higher ups not to bring these charges.  After all, if Pvt. Velez' unborn child IS recognized as human in a military court of law, it could seriously undermine the arguments for abortion and that is discussion that this administration (and it's backers) don't want to have.
