Who Wins in the Fallout of the California Gay-Marriage Ruling? PDF Print E-mail

California became the second state in the nation to legalize gay marriage by judicial fiat yesterday, but the court ruling will only heighten the political ramifications of the issue. In an election year, the debate will bring voters to the polls, and a referendum to amend the California constitution will do so in droves. Who wins in the rather remarkable circumstance of having the court decision highlight the ballot initiative? Already we see the presidential candidates carefully plotting their positions:

Democratic Sens. Barack Obama (Ill.) and Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) issued careful and nearly identical statements saying they support civil unions to protect the rights of same-sex couples. Both avoided taking a position on same-sex marriage, saying states should make such decisions.

Sen. John McCain’s campaign said the Arizona Republican “supports the right of the people of California to recognize marriage as a unique institution sanctioning the union between a man and a woman.”

So you don't have too.....

As we rush headlong into the close of the session, I thought I would take a listen to what is going on in the Legislature today. Right now they are debating whether or not to adopt the conference committee meeting on HF 6 - the Omnibus E-12 Education Funding bill. I will be following the debate over at Ladies Logic for those that are interested in tracking the discussion.

A student teacher who uses a service dog for his epilepsy has had to leave his position early after a Muslim student filed a complaint with a school. Tyler Hurd needs the dog for his protection and for emergency supplies for first-aid responders, but apparently Technical High School in St Cloud believes that Hurd’s needs are secondary to providing a dog-free zone for its Muslim students. Hurd says he feels threatened by the action, as well he should — because the student threatened to kill the dog:

Greiling's Grandstanding PDF Print E-mail

Yesterday I noted that, in her letter to the editor of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Minnesota state Rep. Mindy Greiling accused Star Tribune metro columnist Katherine Kersten of “reckless journalistic standards” and “gross distortion of facts” with respect to her two columns on the Tarek ibn Ziyad Academy.

Kersten's two columns on TIZA are accessible here (March 9) and here (April 9). Greiling's makes no case that supports her assertions regarding Kersten's columns about the school. Yet Greiling called for the Star Tribune to fire Kersten. Here is an overview of the statements Kersten made in her two columns:

The Facts:

1. TIZA’s strong religious connections date from its founding in 2003. Its co-founders, Zaman and Hesham Hussein, were both imams, or Muslim religious leaders, as well as leaders of the Muslim American Society of Minnesota (MAS-MN).

Teaching Respect PDF Print E-mail

When I was a tadpole, long, long, (long) ago and went to public school we were taught a very simple concept: respect. Respect for the teacher. Respect for the principal. Respect for adults in general. But above all else, respect for our country.

We were taught real history back then. 1776, WWII, Alexander Graham Bell, Abraham Lincoln. We were taught (rightly) that this nation, this United States of America was a great and noble thing, something men had stood up and died for. Stood up and fought and died so that I would be safe and free to run around that playground and eat that nasty school lunch. And in order to help teach us little idiots respect we stood up every morning and recited the Pledge of Allegiance. We often sang My Country Tis Of Thee, as well.
