I can report that the Republican caucuses here in the belly of the DFL beast are comparable to the accompanying posts from my colleagues in SD45 and SD43. Yet still, it is very humbling to note that while we are relatively busy with this caucus, our turnout is just a drop in the bucket compared to the DFL turnout. I'd estimated that each caucus might attract approximately 20 bodies. Instead, many caucuses brought in a little more than double that. Echoing the reports from my friends in SD45 and SD43, many of the caucuses in SD60 had to use blank sheets of paper for folks to sign in with so that we wouldn't eat away all the preciously allotted two hours' time to merely signing in before any business was begun. The former chair of SD60 had told me and a number of convener trainees that it was unknown to have a need for more than one PCRC form per one caucus. That ceiling was blasted away tonight, some caucuses requiring three forms. In SD60 the presidential preference vote for president fell out like this; Huckabee 62 Keyes 3 McCain 231 Paul 194 Romney 251 There was also a write-in vote for Newt Gingrich and a write-in vote for Wesley Clark. Oh yes, and there was a write-in vote for Jesus which I chose not to record with the party as I seriously doubt that He will be returning to the world in time for this election cycle to judge the living and the dead and to serve as president of the United States of America. This was a very exciting time for Republicans in SD60. It will be interesting to learn how many of these new faces involved tonight in our caucuses will choose to remain and invest their energies in working for Republican candidates and Republican activities. It is my hope that there will be many who will. We very much need a new infusion of fresh energy. This may mean a remolding of the Republican brand. But at this point, I cannot say what that remold will bring or if it will happen at all. I would say it's all dependent upon leadership to comes to the fore. Oh yes, and one last thing; Happy Ash Wednesday to you. Cross-posted at Freedom Dogs. |
