When you read about the various outrages that occur there on a daily basis, it’s easy to feel like throwing in the towel on the public schools. But like it or not, the public school system still maintains a monopoly on what millions of American children are exposed to and taught every day. If you throw in the towel on the schools, you relinquish control over the paths our future generations will take…in effect you throw in the towel on America’s future. Here in Minnesota, one of the most insidious attacks on our kids these days comes from a group of “kids” who have been organized into a front group for a bunch of cowardly Marxists who are taking advantage of the access they and their ilk have been granted to kids who are too young to understand what they are doing by some public school boards. “Youth Against War and Racism” started with just a couple of red diaper babies at Bloomington Kennedy high school. Since then, with the help of it’s Communist sponsor group “Socialist Alternative” and the useful fools on school boards of several Twin Cities districts, "YAWR" has spread it’s message of anti-Americanism throughout the metro area. The current focus of "YAWR" is the Saint Paul public schools, chosen no doubt because of the sympathetic reception it received from the board and most especially from board member Tom Goldstein. Their mission? To completely remove military recruiters from public school grounds. This is especially outrageous given the fact that despite record budgets, the Saint Paul public school district continues to fail to graduate in excess of 40% of it’s eligible senior students each and every year. 40% folks. That is more than 1400 kids that hit the streets each year without that most basic of tools; a high school diploma. And it’s no wonder. If you look at the percentage of Saint Paul students who have shown proficiency in Math and Reading compared to the rest of the state, you’ll see why these kids can’t pass the minimum grad standards. And yet, the purveyors of poverty and failure that control our public schools would deny recruiters, the last best chance for success that so many of the kids they have failed have, the ability to pull those same kids out of the mire. Last year, my fellow True North contributor Mitch Berg and I attended a public meeting at the district headquarters. We were joined by several members of the military, active and retired, concerned parents and others to confront the board with its folly. The issue was resolved, but not to the satisfaction of Socialist Alternative, who will not be satisfied until the last vestiges of all that makes America great are wiped from our public school campuses and our society. So they have planned a counter-offensive: Come support antiwar students, as they...
