I may have made a mistake.  I stood on a hard cement floor for four hours, in a sweltering airport hangar, on sore feet.  I was so far back in the crowd that I couldn't see or hear John McCain or Sarah Palin.  Instead, I could have been in a nice park, enjoying the soft grass and gentle breezes, listening to messages of hope, peace, and universal prosperity at the Obama rally downtown.   There is no reason for this bad choice, I now realize, except for reason itself.

As I listened to the TV reports from the two rallies, I was struck by the difference in what these two groups perceive as reality.

The "star" of the Obama rally was a young woman who had $20,000 in medical bills, and her father had lost his job.  That's unfortunate.  Had this been a Republican rally, we would have passed the hat and probably collected enough to pay off her medical bills, and found her father a job someplace along the line.  But Democrats do not think in those terms.  Their solution is to sieze government power and send government goon squads into the streets to mug innocent passers-by for her benefit.  This is "fairness" and "compassion."

They think you can have the gold at the end of the rainbow if you just convince enough people that the leprechaun is a greedy conservative who needs to have his gold taken from him.  In the meantime, the Tooth Fairy will cough up enough cash to fund every need, want and wish known to humankind (in exchange for someone else's eye teeth).  It's all magic, not math.  If they were not a major political party they would be institutionalized for such delusional fantasies.  I just wanted to reach into the TV and grab one of them and demand to know "who do you think is going to pay for all this?"  "Why is it my responsibility to care for your family before I care for my own?"   Of course, I know I'll never get an answer.  These folks are already over the rainbow.
