A Psychological Profile

In Pennsylvania this week these words were uttered by Mr. Obama:

“You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them,” Obama said. “And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”

Seldom does one paragraph provide a detailed roadmap into the psyche of a person. This one does. It is presumptive, racked with faulty reasoning and infected with so many stereotypes that if I said something similar, the Speech Police would have me pilloried and Lori Sturdevant and/or Nick Coleman would be stuffing my effigy and handing out matches.

Though I have no degree in psychology, allow my amateur analysis: The man is nuts! He knows so little about Middle America as to be pathologically and certifiably unstable.

Here’s what I read in his statements: “Middle America (read: rednecks), are people who lost their jobs 25 years ago and, ever since, have been sitting around watching pro wrestling and “Cops” - waiting for the government to throw as much money at them as they have thrown at minorities and immigrants! They live in trailers, or an apartment above a bar. The towns they live in haven’t created a new job since the Carter years. Their local economies were devastated by the invention of touchless car washes and automatic pin setters. The citizens of these communities curse their lot in life and wonder why we can’t be more like Europe. Their only social involvement is church, or planning their annual pilgrimage to a NASCAR race, or at the gun range – where they speak for hours on end of the good old days when everyone lived in pastel houses - when minorities and immigrants were largely out of sight and when the world was beating a path to our doorstep to buy our Mustangs, our Levis, our typewriters, our stereophonic records and our Hula Hoops. For Middle America I offer little substance, but if I am elected President, I will afford them the opportunity to bask in my aura.”

This man is running for President, folks – and while my analysis may wax presumptive, so does his! This is the America he sees when he looks out at the fruited plains! This is not the ‘shining city on the hill’ Reagan spoke of – this is the trailer park by the dump!

So, who are you? Do you believe we are a country of opportunity with an abiding allegiance to individual freedoms? Do you see the glass as half full?

Or, are you a Democrat?
