Miss America Pageant and Rush

Written by Janet Beihoffer.

A few days ago, i listened to Rush Limbaugh discussing his role as a judge in the Miss American Pageant. He talked about behind the scenes competitions. Whether or not these events are judged, i don't recall but Rush explained one that in my mind is very important, one that indicates far more about a candidate that the TV show we view.

Turns out each contestant has interviews with the six judges where the judge can ask any question on any topic. The contestant does not know ahead of time who will ask the question, which judge goes first, or what topic will be presented. She simply must formulate and articulate her answer.

This is important because Miss America is thrown into a variety of environments during the year of her reign. At all times she must be poised, patient and knowledgeable. We see the parts that capture TV audiences: swimsuit, evening gown and talent competitions but there is much more to this inside-the-USA ambassador honor. Knowing that this type of pressure is being tested says much about the quality of pageant itself as well as the young women who participate.
